Day of Empathy GRRRL Justice Screening & Panel

Visionary Justice Storylab, ACLU of New Mexico, and the Sanitary Tortilla Factory will present a national screening and community engagement series film, Grrrl Justice. An experimental narrative short by filmmaker Shontina Vernon, Grrrl Justice explores the rising rates of girls and queer youth of color in the juvenile justice system applying the lenses of gender and sexuality. It seeks to use the power of media and story to build solidarity and support communities in engaging in deeper dialogue.

This community workshop will use art and story-sharing to build collective knowledge on social issues as well as explore the various ways art can create social and cultural change. Through story-sharing and art-making, community members will have space to discuss the current issues affecting our communities. Participants will get hands-on experience creating a community art piece, which will be displayed alongside other artists' work in the “Inmigracion y Mucho Más” exhibit happening at The (B) Ruppe on April 3rd.

She is working on a memoir.

Womens History Month-Decorate a Candle-Free Event

Join 505 Fridas on Thursday, February 20th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm for a free and fun crafting session to create a memorial candle for a historically significant woman in history.
LIMITED SEATING: Please reserve your spot so we know how many candles to have on hand.

What 505 Fridas will supply:
• We will have a selection of prints of famous women to use
• Some crafting supplies
• One candle per person
• Water is available from the water fountain, we will have cups.
• Donation for supplies is appreciated

What you can bring:
• Memorial Candles
• Food and drink for sharing if you feel like it
• Your favorite crafting supplies to use or share
• An image of a famous person you admire if there is someone specific you would like to work on

These candles will be yours to keep or sell, but they will be used in an exhibit for Women's History Month at the South Broadway Cultural Center and will be up through May. Your name will be included as an event artist.

Design Your Decade: Goal Setting & Master Planning Workshop

In this short, guided goal setting workshop, you will get all the ideas of what you want from this new decade (and beyond) organized and onto paper + set up a 'just-for-you' action plan that will get you moving in their direction. Event location will be disclosed upon registration, but will be held in the University/downtown area of Albuquerque. This workshop is donation based, meaning that you can register for free, and if you would like to donate, 100% of whatever is recieved will be donated to a local charity. Traditional Retablo Painting Workshop

In this comprehensive full day workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to learn the historic process for preparing and painting traditional retablo paintings featuring the Saints of New Mexico from professional Santera Sean Wells. Sean will take students from the first steps of selecting wood and making hand-made gesso to using natural pigments and finishing the board. Sean teaches the traditional methods handed down for this rare art form born from the Spanish Colonists of Northern New Mexico and discusses the stories behind the imagery. Sean will teach techniques in the context of her personal and the regional history. Students will leave with an understanding of the process of painting a traditional retablo and a deeper appreciation for the Spanish Colonial arts. Students will also leave with a starter set of materials, a finished piece and a blank board to paint at home as well as more surprises!  

You are not required to have artistic skills, this is for all levels of artists! You are not required to be hispanic or to be Catholic to enjoy this art-form.

Sean’s classes and workshops are fun, exciting and easy-to-follow. All materials will be provided. This class usually runs $200, but is being offered at a discounted rate thanks to a grant from Homewise.

Snacks provided, but people with special food requirements are encouraged to bring suitable food to the class. There will be an optional lunch break.

$100 10 adult seats offered
10 scholarship seats will be offered to residents of the Barelas neighborhood in which neighbors can anonymously pay what they are comfortable with.
3 free student scholarship slots will be offered for children 12-18 years.

Reservation Longing is a short film festival that will showcase 8 contemporary indigenous short film makers who were born on or raised on an Indian Reservation in the Southwest US four corners region. This short film exhibition will compare and contrast the vast differences of each reservation and how they have molded artists’ perspectives. Native film makers have a distinctive vision living on and sometimes off the Indian reservation while balancing an American lifestyle.

MindWell's Grand Damn Slam 2019

For the last year, poets have been competing at MindWell, sharing their art and their hearts, but now it's time to decide who will represent the community on the national stage as part of the 2020 MindWell slam team!

The 12 top ranked poets from the community will compete in a 3 round poetry competition, and the top 5 will become the new team - but we need your help to make this happen!

On top of that - the winner of the slam will be crowned City Champion AND will have a collection of their work published by Swimming with Elephants publications!

Come out and join us in celebrating the artistry, performance and precision of these poets who have worked all year to earn a spot on this stage as they compete together. At MindWell, it is always about the community and we are proud of all of these poets, so we need you, the audience to help us decide!

Poets who make the team will go on to compete at national level competition around the nation in 2020.

Come for the poetry, stay for the community, because together we are Stronger Than Stigma!
